Cleaning Up and Changing Habits

I'm actually trying to get my home cleaned in the sense of better organization in some areas and better day to day cleaning in other areas.  And sanity with our baby.

Some thoughts:
  • I hope to get our baby girl on a sleep schedule some time soon.  My first two children did this naturally by two months or so.  With this baby, the only thing I can count on is that she wants to eat every two hours or less.
  • After meals (and bedtime snack) I tend to get distracted (with bad habits of television and computer) and don't always clean up within an appropriate time.  I think just doing this is attainable.  There is nothing like clearing crumbs away from one meal as you are preparing to sit down for the next meal.  My hope is to clean off the table and the counter after meals (for the most part).  Yes, most people sweep after meals, but since I can't do this daily, I don't think it will happen after every meal.  The table, now that is logical and doable.
  • I want to keep purging by getting rid of items we don't love or use regularly.  Until recently I don't think I had donated any children's toys.  However, I have decided that other than some special toys many can be donated.  I am holding on to wooden, classic, and sets for the most part and a few unique items.  But not every single thing.  Because, really, every October we will be celebrating three birthdays and in December we have very generous relatives who like to give at Christmas.  So no, we don't need to keep it all.
  • I will organize our coat closet soon!  Hopefully I will spend little or no money to accomplish this.
Here is why:
But I won't forget that I have a demanding baby.  But hopefully she won't be an excuse either.

Great plan! Sometimes it is those little changes that make the big differences.

And, for the toys, yes - so true - it is wild thinking about how many toys are in my house, when I know it is really the classics and the sturdy wooden ones that will make it for any length of time.

It's so hard to find that right balance. I don't even have the excuse of a new baby for why I'm not doing good at cleaning.

I am with you on all three, and my baby girl is way older than yours!

We have very generous family at Christmas, too! I've been attempting to weed through our mountain of toys and decide what to keep. It's tougher than it seems sometimes. :)

I wish you lived closer; we have so much in common. I could have written this post!

I get distracted after meal times too. It's almost like I just need to chill before the big after-meal clean-ups.

This is something I'm CONSTANTLY working on.

I'm a big believer in getting rid of things I don't use. I have a rule for myself with seasonal decorations: if I haven't figured out a way to use it or I just HAVEN"T used it within three years, the chances are I'm not going to. (I have a couple of things I've had for five years that I've not managed to use ONCE and I doubt I ever will.)

And another rule I have is that everything must be stored away in such a manner that we can still see it on first glance or get to it extremely easily. Because things that hide in dark corners and spaces will be forgotten. And if you don't know you have it, you'll never use it. Wasted space and obviously something that is not needed.

These rules, however, have hurt me more than once now that there are three children who all seem to need different things in different seasons. =) So I'm trying not to be TOO hasty in my cleaning out. But I also don't want to hang on to things we don't need and don't use.

Great plan. I'm a huge believer in getting babies on a regular routine of eat, play, sleep. It's to their benefit as well as mama's benefit!

I hear ya on the dishes and kitchen floor! Dishes are the bane of my existence. I've solved my floor problem by teaching my 6 year old to sweep the floor every morning. He doesn't do it perfectly but he gets up most of the big stuff. :)
